Many novice turners seek to enhance their
repertoire by creating bowls. The design often calls for the rim to be
under-cut. This means they need to hollow out under the rim of the vessel.
However, conventional tools do not lend themselves to this technique.
It is therefore time to look at a popular innovative tool which is designed
for, amongst other things, under-cutting rims. The Robert Sorby multi-tip
hollowing tool (Ref. RS200KT) has a specially designed swivelling tip
which makes easy work of the task.
This particular tool comes complete with three different cutters - one
for scraping, the other two for hollowing. Of the two hollowing cutters
one has a curved shape with creates smooth, flowing shapes. The other
has a more pointed shape. This enables rapid hollowing and at the same
time permits a crisp intersection as in the bottom of a box.
First of all, use the more pointed cutter to carry out your initial hollowing
with the cutter pointing straight forward. Make sure you have the flat
section of the tool shank firmly on the tool rest. This gives you much
more stability. Then to under-cut, select the hollowing cutter you prefer
and articulate the washer so that it is now at an angle. To help further,
it is often useful to angle your tool rest slightly as this makes for
even better access.
This tools is an invaluable addition to any turners armoury. Not only
does the shape of the shank give you stability, but the tips are replaceable
so when they are worn away you simply need to replace them, not the complete
tool. There are also further cutters available for creating beads and
coves.
However, the scraper blade is in itself a major cost-saver. Its particular
shape means that in one cutter you have a square, round and half-round
HSS scraper. Moreover by angling the tool during use you also have a shear
scraper which will give a very fine finish to your piece.
This particular tool is no gimmick. It has been sold widely all around
the world and is often a stepping stones for novices wishing to expand
their skills.
