Woodworking on the Internet
The Internet is a valued source of information for almost every woodworker worldwide. There is a host of sites provided by stores, manufacturers, galleries and individual craftsman. Each one offers a different angle on the hobby.
Whether you are looking for inspiration or advice there is a suitable site out there somewhere for you. Our own links page - www.robert-sorby.co.uk/links - takes you to a number of interesting sites especially those of specialist woodworking stores, magazines and woodworkers' clubs and associations. From there you should be able to navigate your way to discussion groups, galleries and sites put up by like-minded woodworkers around the world.
However, perhaps the most valuable source of impartial help and advice comes from the newsgroups or discussion groups. These offer a wealth of assistance on subjects as disparate as project design, equipment sourcing, tool care and sharpening, characteristics of different woods, club contact information and experiences in general in the field of woodworking.
One of the most appealing aspects of the woodworking groups in particular is that they are frequented by genuine people seeking and offering genuine advice. Unlike similar groups there are few with a personal agenda, none who take pleasure in deliberately maligning others and no sales pitches from company representatives. Rather there is genuine help given on an impartial basis by other woodworkers.
Many ISP's do offer direct newsgroup access. For those who do not enjoy that facility newsgroups are easily accessed via www.google.com and following the trail to the appropriate group:
rec.woodworking - for general woodworkers with help on routing, bench work, table sawing
rec.crafts.woodturning - for turners
rec.crafts.carving - for carvers
The ability to search the history files provides an endless source of information based largely on personal experiences. These newsgroups will reward a visit.
